Piriac Sur Mer is situated close to the large resort of La Baule, in the Loire Atlantique. The area has a mild climate tempered by the gulf stream. Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring towns and cities whilst summer is perfect for seaside holidays.
Piriac Sur Mer is a small working port, handed down by successive generations, where individual architecture is still to be found in these attractive surroundings. It has charming narrow cobbled streets and traditional Breton fishermen’s houses. The coastal region around Piriac Sur Mer has long sandy beaches as well as small safe bays. Nearby La Baule boasts the largest single beach on the west coast of Europe and it is also described as being the most beautiful beach in France.
Just a few kilometres from Piriac Sur Mer is the Brière National Park. One of the best known marshland areas in Europe. Well worth a visit - you can hire a small canal boat and go punting through this bird sanctuary admiring the beautiful scenery.
The walled city of Guérande is close by. This is a fortified city, surrounded by ramparts and is reached via four gates. Gourmets rate the salt collected around Guérande as the finest in the world. Local marshes are patterned with sea salt pans where salt is still gathered the old way, evaporated by sun and wind. There are three small museums that explain the tradition of salt making.
Fishing is still the major industry. In nearby La Turballe, which is a sardine port, you can get up early to see the boats return for the “criée – the morning fish auction.
Le Croisic has an impressive Océarium (aquarium) where you can walk through the underwater tunnel, discover sharks, groupers and winged rays swimming quietly around you. Don’t miss the penguin feeding shows (three times a day).
Sailing is in the blood here with several great French yachtsmen from the region. All the seaside resorts have sailing and windsurfing schools as well as sand yachting and kite surfing.
Golf – The Loire Atlantique region has eight 18 whole courses. The closest course to Piriac Sur Mer is the Barrière International at La Baule with two 18 hole courses and La Bretesche where a 15th century chateau overlooks the fairways. You can enjoy a gourmet dinner in the beautiful restaurant.
Food – Naturally seafood and crustacean are in abundance and you can enjoy the most delicious seafood platter at many of the excellent local restaurants as well as fresh mussels cooked in a variety of ways. Crepes or galettes (savoury pancakes) are another speciality of the region. The locally produced cider and muscadet compliments the wide variety of fish and seafood.
Other attractions include; tennis, mini golf, horse riding and biking. Enough to delight all members of the family, young and old!
